About the Program
Seneca's King Campus is part of a provincially significant wetland complex and is a valued source of headwaters to the Humber Rivers watershed, which is part of the Canadian Heritage Rivers System. In this unique two-year diploma program, the majority of your outdoor training will take place on this land. You will study ecology, traditional types of landscaping, practical skills and receive an overview of the ecosystem allowing you to understand the impact humans have on the environment and how to protect and restore its natural landscapes.
The demand for environmental landscape management is growing within private and public organizations, therefore employers are in search of graduates who are committed, skilled and knowledgeable in the profession.

This program is offered in Seneca's hybrid delivery format. Some coursework is online and some must be completed in person. Students will need to come on campus to complete in-person learning requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes
This Seneca program has been validated by the Credential Validation Service as an Ontario College Credential as required by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
As a graduate, you will be prepared to reliably demonstrate the ability to:
- Operate small engine machinery safely and maintain it for maximum efficiency.
- Carry out tree maintenance (such as pruning and climbing), select and use trees in a landscape design, and develop tree identification skills.
- Analyze landscape situations, recommend corrective construction methods and installation procedures, and effectively perform hard landscape installations.
- Establish and maintain a healthy woodlot, utilizing current forestry techniques. Be knowledgeable about various grasses, their selection in terms of usage, and the maintenance techniques necessary to establish healthy turf vegetation.
- Identify, select, and use plant and shrub materials in landscape designs.
- To be knowledgeable about the complex factors which interact to influence the distribution, growth and decline of free roaming species, and the fish and wildlife management techniques which allow animals to co-exist closely with humans.
- Be knowledgeable about basic biology and life cycles of the main classes of vertebrates, the keys to recognition of some of the more common Ontario species, and the elements of nature interpretation in a park setting.
- Perform duties involved in greenhouse operations including plan propagation and the creation of interior landscapes.
- Be knowledgeable about chemical toxicology and the correct use of control chemicals used in parks, golf courses and private operations in order to carry out pesticide and weed control operations safely and according to Ontario regulations.
- Be knowledgeable about the systems of park services, organizations and agencies in this county, and of the relationships between the public and private sectors of this industry.
- Appreciate the importance and purpose of recreation program and ancillary services in parks, and develop/organize the same.
- To be knowledgeable about park planning and park legislation.
- To develop a Park Maintenance Plan for open spaces and for recreational facilities.
- Be knowledgeable about various leadership styles and public relation skills appropriate to the parks and recreation industry.
- Be knowledgeable about and be able to explain environmental issues facing Canadians, and the approaches being used to deal with the problem.
- Be familiar with basic microcomputer concepts and operations, and their application in the administration of parks and recreational facilities.
- Communicate effectively in speech and writing, and prepare reports.
- Identify sources of legislation related to all aspects of this industry.
- Be knowledgeable about accounting concepts and principles, private recreation business finance, and the budgeting process.
- Perform business functions common to the private sector of this industry.
- Perform the various functions common to the private sector of this industry.
- Identify the areas of this industry in which the graduate wishes to gain employment, develop a job search plan, and effectively present themselves for employment.

- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or a mature applicant
- English: Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent course
Canadian citizens and permanent residents may meet English requirements for this program through successful Seneca pre-admission testing.
Recommended upgrading for applicants who do not meet academic subject requirements.
Notes
The practical skills training and optional co-op work components in this program involve physically challenging work. The outdoor environment and some program activities may offer an element of risk. To succeed, you must be capable of participating in strenuous physical activity.
