About the Program
This two-year diploma program is the first of its kind in the GTA. It is uniquely designed to meet the growing need for enhanced workplace health and safety in every industry. You will develop strong foundational knowledge in health and safety to identify, manage and assess risks in various workplace settings. This program will also focus on the policies and procedures in the care and prevention practice. You will apply concepts and theories with practical experience in field placements and graduate with the skills needed to identify and report on safety and health conditions in the workplace.

Program and Course Delivery
This program is offered in Seneca's hybrid delivery format with some courses available in Seneca's flexible delivery format. Some coursework is online and some must be completed in person. Students will need to come on campus to complete in-person learning requirements. For courses offered in the flexible delivery format, professors use innovative learning spaces and technology to teach students in a classroom or lab and broadcast in real time to students attending remotely. In flexible courses, students have the choice of coming on campus or learning online.
Skills
Throughout this program you will develop the following skills:
- Develop and implement health and safety policies
- Develop and facilitate health and safety training
- Conduct accident investigations and emergency response plans
Students will be exposed to their professional environment by completing a 14-week mandatory field placement in semester three. The field placement is two days per week totaling 16 to 20 hours and is paid or unpaid depending on the employer. In semester two students will prepare for field placement in the Workplace Preparation course; gaining skills in resume and cover letter building, interviewing, job search and more.
Students must be in good academic standing and meet all requirements prior to participating in field placement. Successful completion of field placement is required for graduation. Eligibility for participation does not guarantee that a particular placement will be secured.

Program Learning Outcomes
This Seneca program has been validated by the Credential Validation Service as an Ontario College Credential as required by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
As a graduate, you will be prepared to reliably demonstrate the ability to:
- Develop, implement and evaluate organizational health and safety policies and practices that adhere to government legislation, regulations and guidelines
- Develop and facilitate Health and Safety training for workers with the goal of increasing safety and preventing accidents
- Conduct accident investigations, emergency response plans, injury prevention plans and root cause analysis documentation that follow workplace safety protocols
- Identify and evaluate biological, physical, chemical, and psycho-social hazards and apply safety systems in the workplace to manage risk.
- Facilitate and support an effective health and safety program in both non-union and union environments
- Research existing industry standards, produce reports and provide recommendations for changes for continuing improvement of the health, safety, disability, ergonomic, emergency and environmental management systems
- Manage human resources in a diverse workplace to facilitate change and policy compliance
- Communicate effectively using oral, written, and computer information systems to promote a strong internal workplace safety prevention culture
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or a mature applicant
- English: Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent course
- Chemistry: Grade 12 C or Grade 11 U, or Biology Grade 11 C or U, or equivalent course
Canadian citizens and permanent residents may meet English requirements for this program through successful Seneca pre-admission testing.
Recommended upgrading for applicants who do not meet academic subject requirements.
Although only one senior Biology or senior Chemistry course is required for admission, completing one of each is recommended for your success in the program.
International Student Information
International admissions requirements vary by program and in addition to English requirements, programs may require credits in mathematics, biology, and chemistry at a level equivalent to Ontario’s curriculum, or a postsecondary degree or diploma, equivalent to an Ontario university or college.
